Located in the northeast corner of Nebraska, Dakota County boasts a rich history that dates back to 1867. Today, Dakota County is comprised of two cities (Dakota City and South Sioux City), three villages (Jackson, Homer, and Hubbard), and one unincorporated village known as Willis. One portion of Emerson village also lies within the boundaries of Dakota County, bringing the total population up to just over 21,000 as of the 2010 census.

While Dakota County is believed to have first been settled in the late 1700s, it was not until the 1850s that European-American settlers officially formed and named the territory. Interestingly enough, the county is believed to have been named after the famed Dakota Sioux tribe that occupied the northeast area of Nebraska and parts of South Dakota during that time.

Today, residents of Dakota County enjoy a quiet, peaceful way of living—along with numerous area landmarks and points of interest. One of the county’s most popular attractions is the famous O’Connor House, a restored 19th century mansion that is available for private and public tours on select dates.
